Position Overview

Our organization is undergoing comprehensive data modernization initiatives, transforming legacy systems into modern Data Management and Geospatial Platforms. This shift fundamentally changes how users collect, manage, analyze, and leverage data.

This role will primarily support a flagship enterprise digital transformation program focused on streamlining and modernizing complex regulatory, compliance, and operational processes. The increasing scale of transactional and operational data creates an ongoing need for dedicated business intelligence and analytics capabilities.

The successful candidate will drive operational monitoring, performance measurement, and strategic decision-making across the full data lifecycle. As data and analytics maturity increases, the role may expand to support additional enterprise-wide data initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Data Modeling & ETL Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust data models and visualizations using Microsoft Power BI and cloud-based data platforms.
  • Create optimized, scalable, and reusable data models using DAX and Power Query M for enterprise-wide reporting.
  • Integrate Power BI with various cloud data sources, data pipelines, staging areas, and on-premises databases.
  • Collaborate closely with data architects, business users, and data engineers to manage semantic layers and optimize data pipelines.

Dashboards, Visualizations & Reporting

  • Design and develop complex, interactive dashboards, scorecards, and visual analytics tailored to specific business needs.
  • Translate ambiguous business questions and strategic KPIs into actionable BI solutions.
  • Present data insights, trends, and findings in clear, executive-friendly formats to stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Integrate advanced AI capabilities to augment analytical processes, automate data exploration, identify anomalies, and generate predictive insights.

Governance, Performance Tuning & Support

  • Implement advanced features including Incremental Refresh, Row-Level Security (RLS), and comprehensive user access controls.
  • Optimize dashboard and report performance to ensure fast load times and seamless user experiences.
  • Maintain and publish datasets in Power BI Service, configuring scheduled refreshes and automated alerts.
  • Ensure rigorous data accuracy, consistency, and security compliance across all active reporting assets.
  • Provide end-user training, documentation, and support to foster a data-driven culture and ensure high adoption of BI tools.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Proven expertise in Microsoft Power BI (Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service).
  • Strong experience with Power Query and DAX.
  • Experience working with Azure cloud data platforms and enterprise relational databases.
  • Strong understanding of Data Warehousing concepts.
  • Experience with ETL/ELT processes and Dimensional Data Modeling.
  • Experience integrating Power BI with cloud and on-premises data sources.
  • Familiarity with AI/Machine Learning capabilities within BI tools is highly desirable.

Soft Skills

  • Exceptional requirements gathering and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to bridge business and technical teams effectively.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable presenting insights and recommendations to executive leadership.

Work Environment

  • Remote within Canada.
  • Standard business hours: Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day (Mountain Time).
  • Occasional travel to Edmonton, Alberta (approximately 3–4 times per fiscal year).
  • Travel, accommodation, and related expenses are the responsibility of the contractor.
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) environment. Candidates must provide a modern Windows (preferred) or MacOS device compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting enterprise digital transformation initiatives.
  • Experience with geospatial data platforms.
  • Knowledge of AI-driven analytics and automated insight generation.
  • Experience working within large-scale enterprise environments.
